Our score: 4.6 out of 5
ClickUp is the best free project management tool for a real team, and it is also the one most likely to overwhelm that team in week one. The score is for the product you get at $0 and at $7, not for how calm the screen is.
How the 4.6 breaks down
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | 5 / 5 | Unlimited members and tasks. The 60 MB storage cap is the only hard wall |
| Value for money | 5 / 5 | $7 per user billed yearly, no seat minimum, Gantt included. The cheapest plan with a Gantt chart among ClickUp, monday.com, Asana and Trello |
| Features | 5 / 5 | Tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, forms and sprints in one workspace |
| Ease of use | 3.5 / 5 | Spaces, Folders, Lists, statuses and views all need decisions before the team joins |
| Billing clarity | 4.5 / 5 | Exact headcount, prorated, 30-day refund. Trial uses make it hard to see what a plan really includes |
How we reviewed ClickUp
We read ClickUp's complete feature list on clickup.com/pricing on September 28, 2026 and compared every limit a small team hits (storage, Spaces, automations, guests, trial features) with monday.com, Asana and Trello. We then priced the same team sizes on each tool, with each vendor's seat rules applied. ClickUp did not review this page. We earn a commission if you sign up through our links, and that is disclosed at the top of the page.
What ClickUp does well
- The free plan does not charge you for inviting the team. That is rare. monday.com, Asana and Trello all cap free collaborators.
- Tasks, docs, whiteboards and sprints live in one workspace, so a project plan and the write-up stay together.
- Unlimited at $7 per user billed yearly is a real step up: unlimited storage, native time tracking, Gantt charts and guest permissions.
- You can run list, board, calendar and table views on the free plan, which covers a tracker and a planner without paying.
Where ClickUp falls short
- 60 MB of storage for the whole free workspace is a hard limit. A handful of design files will hit it.
- Gantt, dashboards, time tracking and custom fields on Free are trial uses. They are a demo, not a plan feature.
- The settings are deep. A team that wanted a board will find Spaces, Folders, Lists and views, and some of them will not match.
- Guests on the free plan have full edit access. You cannot make a client view-only until you pay.

The trial-use system, explained
ClickUp's pricing table marks many free-plan features as "Trial": Gantt, custom fields, time tracking, goals, dashboards, custom task types and more. ClickUp says these uses are a demonstration of paid features. They are counted for the whole workspace, and they do not reset. When a feature runs out, your data stays, but nobody can create or edit with that feature until you upgrade.
Unlimited does not remove every trial either. Timeline, Workload, Dashboards and Timesheets are still trial uses on Unlimited and are fully included on Business. That is our main criticism of ClickUp's pricing: the plan names suggest more than the plan table delivers. Read the full limits table before you pay for a specific view.
What it costs a real team

|---|---|---|---|
| 3 people | $0 | $252 | $432 |
| 5 people | $0 | $420 | $720 |

ClickUp Unlimited
Asana Starter
monday.com Standard
Trello PremiumFor comparison, 10 people cost $1,440 a year on monday.com Standard and $1,318.80 on Asana Starter, both billed yearly. ClickUp Unlimited is $840. The saving is real, and it grows with every hire, because ClickUp bills the exact headcount.
Who should skip it
Skip ClickUp if the job is a single kanban board and nothing else. Trello is faster for that, and monday.com vs Trello covers the other simple-board choice. Skip it if you want a quiet personal list for two people: Asana's Personal plan is calmer, and we compare them on ClickUp vs Asana.
If you only need a plan for yourself, with no account, the free project planner on this site stores the board in your browser.

Frequently asked questions
Is ClickUp worth it in 2026?
Yes if you want one workspace for tasks, docs and time tracking and you can tolerate a busy interface. The free plan is the most generous of the major tools. It is a poor fit if you want something your team understands in an afternoon.
What is wrong with ClickUp?
The interface has too many ways to do the same thing, so teams leave features half-configured. Storage on the free plan is 60 MB for the whole workspace. Several headline features are trial uses until you pay.
Is ClickUp really free?
The Free Forever plan does not expire and does not cap members or tasks. It does cap storage at 60 MB and Spaces at 5, and Gantt, dashboards and time tracking run out of trial uses.
ClickUp vs monday.com for a first tool?
ClickUp if price and the free member cap matter. monday.com if you want the team using it this week without a training session. See ClickUp vs monday.com for the numbers.
How much is ClickUp after the free plan?
Unlimited is $7 per user per month billed yearly, or $10 monthly. Business is $12 yearly or $19 monthly. The upgrade covers the whole workspace.
Is ClickUp good for small teams?
Yes, on price. A team of 5 pays $0 on Free Forever or $420 a year on Unlimited, with no seat minimum. The cost is setup time: someone has to decide how Spaces, Lists and statuses are organized before the team joins.
Does ClickUp offer a refund?
ClickUp advertises a full refund if you ask within 30 days of a purchase. That makes a yearly Unlimited plan a lower-risk commitment than Asana, which does not refund.
