ClickUp wins for any team that should not pay just to add people. Asana wins for one or two people who want a calm task list and do not need the rest of a work suite.
Cost for the same team

Asana: asana.com/pricing (Personal is free for 2 users; Starter $10.99 and Advanced $24.99 per user per month billed yearly; seats are sold in bundles). ClickUp vs Asana
| Free plan | Unlimited members, 60 MB, trial uses of advanced views | Personal, 2 users, unlimited tasks and projects |
|---|---|---|
| First paid plan | Unlimited, $7 / user yearly ($10 monthly) | Starter, $10.99 / user yearly |
| Timeline / Gantt | Gantt on Unlimited; trial on Free | Timeline and Gantt on Starter |
| Guests | Full access on Free; permissions on Unlimited | Unlimited free guests on Starter |
| Feel | A lot of product in one workspace | Quiet tasks, projects and teams |
| Billing catch | The whole workspace upgrades together | Seat bundles past 5 users |
Asana is the tool people recommend when they hated a cluttered workspace. That reputation is fair. List, board and calendar views are on the free plan, storage is generous (100 MB per file), and the 100+ integrations are real. The trade is the 2-user wall.
ClickUp asks you to ignore features you do not need. In return the free plan fits a class, a client team or a startup that is not ready for a per-seat bill. See also Asana vs monday.com if the other choice is a board tool rather than Asana.
The free plans, line by line
| Members | Unlimited | 2 users |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | 60 MB for the whole workspace | Unlimited, 100 MB per file |
| Views | List, board, calendar, table; Gantt as trial uses | List, board, calendar |
| Automations | 5 rules, 100 runs / month | None (rules start on Starter) |
| Time tracking | Trial uses | Through integrations |
| Guests | Unlimited, with full edit access | Unlimited free guests start on Starter |
| Integrations | Integrations such as Slack and Google Drive start on Unlimited | 100+ free integrations |
Asana's free plan is the more complete product for two people: nothing on it is a countdown, storage will not run out, and it connects to Slack, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 for free. ClickUp's free plan is the only one of the two that a team of eight can use without paying, and it goes further (Gantt, automations) for as long as the trial uses last.
ClickUp Unlimited vs Asana Starter
